Rehabilitation therapy

Massage therapy can be incorporated into the rehabilitation program following an injury or surgery.  At RMT Ottawa, we are able to offer a comprehensive program to aid in the rehabilitation process through our specially trained massage therapists.

Rehabilitation Therapy

During a traditional rehabilitation session, the physical or occupational therapist works with the patient to increase mobility and motion through various exercises and manipulations.  This strengthens the tissues but also can leave them stressed.

Massage therapy manipulates the muscles and other soft tissues.  This includes the fascia, skin, tendons, ligaments, and joints.  The massage increases circulation to allow blood flow to infiltrate the areas easier to help with the recuperation process.  It also helps relieve the waste material accumulated in the muscles and other tissues.  Many patients have found increased range of motion following massage treatments, as well as additional flexibility.

Rehabilitation is a stressful process.  Massage therapy helps to relax the patient.  Lower stress means a better attitude and general feeling of well being.

Using a variety of manual techniques, the massage therapist can be part of the rehabilitation team that helps restore the client to better function.  The massage elements include myofascial release, muscle energy, positional release, and others.  These manipulations gently release the tightness in the muscles and connective tissues, making them more pliable and receptive to the traditional physical and occupational therapy regimens.

Through the elimination of waste material and toxins from the blood and lymphatic system, the body will function more efficiently.  It also has been shown to decrease pain and discomfort, making the traditional exercises easier for the patient to tolerate.  Less emotional stress also allows the client to be receptive to suggestions and at-home procedures.

There are various types of medical massage that will focus on the areas of the body related to the medical diagnosis for which the rehabilitation is directed.  These include deep tissue, trigger point, neuromuscular, myofascial release, hydrotherapy, and others.

Our registered, professional therapists have been trained to work with those individuals going through rehabilitation and are able to help with the process.  After a complete medical history that includes the condition and any reasons to avoid massage in specific areas, we coordinate with any other treating medical personnel including physicians, osteopaths, chiropractors, and even dentists.

Through this interpersonal cooperation, we are able to reduce the anxiety associated with rehabilitation therapy and increase circulation to the affected area and the entire body.  At RMT Ottawa we offer mobile massage therapy as an option.  That means even more convenience for the individual since we can come into the home and avoid unnecessary travel for the patient and family members.

If you or a loved one is currently in a physical rehabilitation program, contact our office to see how our massage therapy can supplement the traditional methods.  We are happy to answer any of your questions and counsel as appropriate.
