Myofascial Release

Gentle, sustained pressure to release restrictions in the fascia—the connective tissue network that surrounds every muscle, bone, and organ in your body.

Myofascial release therapy

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial release (MFR) is a specialized hands-on technique that targets the fascia—the three-dimensional web of connective tissue that surrounds and supports every structure in your body. When healthy, fascia is fluid and flexible. When restricted, it can create pain, tension, and limited mobility.

Fascial restrictions can develop from physical trauma, inflammation, surgery, or prolonged postural stress. Because fascia forms a continuous network throughout the body, a restriction in one area can create problems in seemingly unrelated regions.

Unlike traditional massage that works primarily on muscles, myofascial release applies gentle, sustained pressure to stretch and release the fascial system. This low-load, long-duration approach allows the tissue to reorganize and restore its natural fluidity.

Benefits of myofascial release

Benefits of Myofascial Release

Myofascial release can produce profound changes in how your body moves and feels:

  • Pain relief — Releases fascial restrictions that cause chronic pain
  • Improved mobility — Restores natural range of motion and flexibility
  • Better posture — Releases patterns that pull the body out of alignment
  • Reduced tension — Decreases overall muscular holding patterns
  • Enhanced circulation — Improves blood and lymph flow
  • Scar tissue release — Softens and mobilizes surgical and injury scars
  • Whole-body balance — Addresses interconnected fascial patterns

Conditions That Respond to MFR

Myofascial release is particularly effective for conditions that haven't responded to conventional treatment. Many clients find relief after years of unexplained pain:

  • Chronic back and neck pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Post-surgical restrictions
  • Scoliosis-related discomfort

Because fascia affects every system in the body, myofascial release can benefit almost anyone experiencing chronic pain, restricted movement, or persistent tension patterns.

What to Expect

Myofascial release feels different from traditional massage. Your therapist applies gentle, sustained pressure—often holding a single position for several minutes—while the fascia slowly releases and lengthens.

You may feel a stretching sensation, warmth, or softening as the tissue responds. Some clients experience emotional releases during treatment, as fascia can hold emotional as well as physical tension.

The effects of MFR often continue to develop for several days after treatment. Many clients report continued improvement in mobility and decreased pain in the days following their session. For best results, a series of treatments is often recommended.
